Safeguarding in Schools: What Every Educator Needs to Know

Whether you are a teacher, support staff member, or school leader, you play a vital role in keeping children safe and ensuring their wellbeing. More than just a statutory requirement, safeguarding is about creating a safe, supportive environment where pupils can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. In this blog, we outline what every educator needs to know about safeguarding in schools, why it matters, and how you can contribute to a culture of safety.

Understanding Safeguarding

Safeguarding is broader than child protection. While child protection focuses specifically on protecting children from harm, safeguarding encompasses everything schools do to promote safety and wellbeing. This includes:

  • Protecting children from maltreatment and neglect.
  • Preventing impairment of health or development.
  • Ensuring children grow up in safe and effective care.
  • Taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes.

In practice, safeguarding means being alert to risks, recognising warning signs, following policies and procedures, and putting children’s welfare first.

Educators must be aware of the statutory guidance that underpins safeguarding in schools. The most significant document is Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), updated annually by the Department for Education. It sets out the legal duties of schools and staff, covering safer recruitment, child protection, online safety, and the role of designated safeguarding leads (DSLs).

All staff are required to read at least Part One of KCSIE, ensuring a shared understanding of responsibilities. Ofsted also evaluates safeguarding as part of inspections, emphasising that it is central to school effectiveness. If you would like to take some time to read the latest version of KCSIE, you can do so by clicking here.

Key Responsibilities for Educators

Every adult working in a school has a duty of care. While safeguarding leads and senior leaders hold specific responsibilities, all staff must:

  • Notice changes in behaviour, appearance, or attendance that may signal a safeguarding concern.
  • Follow your school’s safeguarding policies and procedures and know who the DSL is. Concerns should never be ignored or kept to yourself.
  • Relationships with pupils should always be appropriate, transparent, and in line with school policy.
  • Contribute to a culture of openness, respect, and inclusion where children feel safe to share concerns.
  • Keep up to date with training, policies, and guidance.

Online Safety

With technology embedded in education and everyday life, online safety is a crucial aspect of safeguarding. Schools must teach pupils how to stay safe online, while staff should be aware of risks such as cyberbullying, grooming, and exposure to harmful content. Ensuring filters, monitoring systems, and digital literacy education are in place helps protect children in a rapidly changing digital world.

Building a Safeguarding Culture

Effective safeguarding relies on more than policies and checklists it depends on culture. In the best schools, safeguarding is part of everyday practice, where staff work together, listen to children, and act promptly when concerns arise. Creating this culture requires:

  • Clear leadership from senior staff.
  • Ongoing training for all employees.
  • Open communication between staff, pupils, and parents.
  • Reflective practice that reviews and strengthens safeguarding measures.

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. By remaining vigilant, informed, and proactive, educators can ensure that schools remain places of safety and support. Beyond compliance, safeguarding is about giving every child the security and care they need to succeed.
