At MAT Recruitment, we understand the challenges faced by students who struggle to attend school, often known as school refusers. These students may have been out of school for extended periods and as such the impact on their learning is significant. Our dedicated Tutoring division, MAT Tutors, is here to help. By offering tailored online tutoring sessions in key GCSE subjects, we ensure that students who cannot attend school are still given the opportunity to learn and grow.
Here at MAT Tutors we offer tutoring intervention to suit each and every young person, whether that is through structured, in-person sessions on a weekly basis to support boosting attainment, GCSE Masterclasses in the lead up to exams to boost exam confidence or allow students to access those top grades, or most commonly our online sessions for students who need intervention in order to reach attendance and attainment standards set.
Through our work with one of our partner Multi-academy Trusts, we’ve seen first-hand the transformative results of this approach. Many students, previously disengaged, have been able to re-engage with education in a meaningful way. In fact, a large proportion of students achieved Functional Skills Level 2 qualifications, while others have successfully returned to mainstream education. Our tutors continuously monitor students re-entering school in years 9, 10, and 11, as their academic journey progresses.
Attendance has been a standout success. Of the students we support, 70% attended over 80% of their scheduled sessions, a stark contrast to their previous struggles with school attendance. Some students attended as many as three English and three Maths sessions per week. This level of engagement has been key to rebuilding their confidence and regaining a learning routine.
The impact of our tailored approach can be seen in the progress of individual students. For example, one student who initially struggled with their GCSE content made remarkable strides after engaging with our tutors, moving from foundational skills to more advanced topics. Another student, with significant social and emotional needs, found stability through our sessions, attending regularly after a long period of being out of education. These cases highlight how personalised online tutoring can help students regain both their confidence and academic momentum.
If your school is facing similar challenges, MAT Tutors can provide the tailored, compassionate support that school refusers need. To learn more about how we can help, contact our MAT Tutor coordinator, Amber, at 0330 1244 363. Let’s work together to ensure no student is left behind.
