Teacher Wellbeing: How to Maintain Balance & Avoid Stress

Teaching is one of the most rewarding professions but it can also be one of the most demanding. With lesson planning, marking, pastoral care, and extracurricular responsibilities, it’s no surprise that teacher wellbeing is a growing concern for Schools, Trusts and Teacher’s alike. Prioritising mental health and maintaining a healthy work-life balance is essential not only for teachers’ personal wellbeing but also for student success and staff retention.

Why Teacher Wellbeing Matters

According to a 2024 Teacher Wellbeing Index, over 75% of education staff reported feeling stressed, with workload being the primary cause. When teachers are supported, they are more engaged, resilient, and effective in the classroom. For Schools and Trusts, investing in staff wellbeing is not just a moral imperative, it’s a strategic one.

1. Set Clear Boundaries

One of the most effective ways to reduce stress is to establish clear boundaries between work and personal life. Avoid checking emails after hours, and set realistic expectations for marking and planning. Encourage your school leadership to support this culture by modelling healthy boundaries themselves.

2. Use Your Support Network

Whether it’s a mentor, a colleague, or a wellbeing lead within your MAT, don’t hesitate to reach out. Many MATs now offer Employee Assistance or Wellbeing Programmes, which provide confidential counselling and mental health support. If your trust doesn’t yet offer this, consider advocating for it.

3. Prioritise Physical and Mental Health

Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep are foundational to managing stress. Mindfulness practices such as meditation or journaling can also help teachers stay grounded. Apps like Headspace and Calm offer free resources for educators.

4. Leverage Resources

Many MATs are now implementing wellbeing strategies across their schools. These may include flexible working policies, wellbeing CPD sessions, or designated wellbeing champions. Check your MAT’s intranet or speak to HR to see what’s available.

5. Celebrate Small Wins

Teaching is full of small victories, whether it’s a breakthrough with a student or a successful lesson. Taking time to reflect on these moments can boost morale and remind you why you chose this profession.

6. Professional Development with Purpose

Sometimes, stress stems from feeling stagnant. Seek out CPD opportunities that align with your passions and career goals. MATs often offer internal training or partnerships with external providers—take advantage of these to grow without burning out.

Employee wellbeing isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. By fostering a culture of care, MATs can ensure their staff feel valued, supported, and empowered to thrive. Whether you’re a newly qualified teacher or a seasoned educator, taking proactive steps to manage stress and maintain balance will benefit both you and your students.
