Thinking out Loud: Recruiting Baby Boomers to Generation Z

They say that teaching is one of the most commendable careers and we believe that is true for every role involved in the Education sector, from leaders to support staff. Not only this, but teaching is a diverse career, including all. Here at MAT Recruitment, we work with candidates of all levels from ECTs to those securing their final role in their career- because of this we have had to adapt to all methods of advertisement and marketing, ensuring that we tailor our recruitment campaigns to reach the largest target market.

Age is just a number; however, each generation is unique and with Gen Zs, Millennials, Gen Xers and Baby Boomers all a part of the modern workplace, here at MAT Recruitment we want to ensure that we cater for each individual, attracting the right people and matching them to the right job! Nevertheless, we must remember there is no “one size fits all” approach, but common similarities exist amongst all generations, so catering our message to engage appropriate candidates is a must!

The most obvious difference between each generation would be the differing attitudes and career aspirations. For example, Baby boomers are experienced and hardworking with a tendency to stay in a certain role longer than modern generations because of this Boomers look for roles with a sense of stability, with flexible hours or even part time work as they approach retirement. Conversely, Generation X want growth opportunities, a good work life balance and training and development in order to facilitate their growth. Lastly, Millennials and Gen Z look for much of the same benefits in their job role, such as learning opportunities and the ability to grow, mentorship and unlike the previous generations the opportunity to work within a technology forward company.
So, how can we capitalise upon this to ensure that we tick all the recruitment desirables for these candidates? For Millennials and Gen Z it’s simple, applying technology tactics such as proactive outreach via email, text and social media is above all the most important for ensuring we are appealing to these markets. Although much the same for Generation X, with 76% frequently active on Social Media in 2019, it is important to stay connected via sources such as email as the strongest communication channel utilised by this age group. Lastly, Baby Boomers look for traditional and technological tactics, using sources such as print, and telephone calls is the best way to stay connected to this generation.

Here at MAT Recruitment, we understand that in order to stay connected across the generations using integrated communications is the best route to finding candidates their dream roles! However, one commonality that each generation responds to is a simple yet effective conversation about their skills, requirements and aspirations. Because of this our dedicated team take the time to headhunt the best quality candidates possible. As a committed recruitment partner, we take the time to understand our candidates so that we can match the best people to brilliant roles.
